Lee H. Smith

Lee was born on January 7, 1935 and passed away on Wednesday, September 19, 2018.

Lee was a resident of Texas at the time of passing.

He grew up early in Gober, Texas (also Fannin County), and attended the Dallas Public School System from 1949 to 1953, graduating as co-valedictorian from Sunset High School in 1953, where he was president of his class as well as the student body, holder of the Key of Knowledge, most popular boy, and an outstanding basketball player, being selected to the All City and All Greater Dallas basketball teams.

Services were held at Restland Funeral Home, North Greenville Avenue, Dallas, TX

On July 19, 2014, Texas State University (formerly SWT) honored Eva and Lee for their many University contributions through the naming of the former Academy Property, subsequently called the West Campus, as the "Lee H. and Eva L. Smith West Campus".  He served as president of Texas State University in San Marcos 1974-1981

Known for his attention to detail, Dr.Smith instituted written policies and procedures where none had existed. He also created job descriptions and implemented long-range planning and analysis.

He oversaw acquisition of the 78.5-acre San Marcos Baptist Academy property adjacent to campus and the move to NCAA athletics. Enrollment growth continued, reaching 15,400 by 1981.

He had health battles for a number of years from kidney cancer.  He lost Eva a few years prior to his death.

I am going on my memory for his last years.  He taught at UT Dallas for several years.  We were not friends when we were at Sunset High School, but became friends later in life.  Lee was a believer in Jesus Christ and did much to spread the Gospel to many people.  He came to a meeting of the Panther Bible study group and told of his work for the Church.
